Can a guinea pig live with a 1 year old rabbit?

I have a one year old rabbit. I have heard that guinea pigs and rabbits get on well together. If I bought a guinea pig could I put her in the same hutch as my rabbit or would I have to buy a new hutch for the guinea pig?Can a guinea pig live with a 1 year old rabbit?
Hello Lollipop.

I would definitely NOT advise you to house a rabbit and guinea pig together. Rabbits can often bully guinea pigs so they don't eat properly. In addition, their different nutritional requirements, cage space and exercise needs mean that they are not ideally suited to live together.

To find out more information, check out www.theguineapigforum.co.uk - there is lots of useful information on there. Can a guinea pig live with a 1 year old rabbit?
You can put both guinea pigs and rabbits together as they are both the same species just with different names, i have had 2 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits before and put them both in the same hut and the same run and they got on with each other fine, they did not fight I had them for 4 years but sold them

Well the rabbit will feel that where it lives, it's his territory so he might feel a bit weird about it and attack him, you need to let them meet in an unfamiliar area first to see if they get on. Then if they don't you can work it out from there.

If they do attack each other try throwing a bit of water on them, should calm them down. But i wouldn't put them back together!

I doubt they'll get on to be honest, i tried it a few years ago and it failed big time...
Please do not buy a guinea pig. Get one from someone else who does not want theirs anymore. I got one for free on craigslist.

I bet after a few months there will be a lot of guinea pigs available because people bought them after that new movie came out and won't be able to keep taking care of them.

I made my own open cage for my guinea pig. They really need a lot of room. If you are going to buy a guinea pig, I recommend a really big cage as they love to run around.
Yes. I had a rabbit and a guinea pig, I bought the guinea pig a year after I bought the rabbit and they loved each other, if you took one out of the hutch the other would cry lol. However, the rabbit died after three years of living with the guinea pig and the guinea pig missed him so much that I was afraid he would die too so I bought a new rabbit and he got jealous of the new rabbit (the guinea pig didn't get aggressive but he wanted more attention so he would occasionally run up to me and stroke his head on me! Lol) but after a few weeks of living together they were fine! They got on really well! Animals are different just like us, some prefer to be on their own, others want company. By the way mine is a dwarf rabbit but I do know people with large rabbits who have bought guinea pigs after a few years of having the rabbit on his/her own.
i wouldnt try it they may try to kill each other. but you could always put them together while watching them to make sure they behave for at least an hour or so. then if everything goes well just check on them throughout the day to make sure things are still going smoothly. but guinea pigs shouldnt be in outside hutches. theyre too fragile.
no don't keep guinea pigs with rabbits, rabbits are much bigger and stronger, the guinea pig may be badly injured if the rabbit kicks out.also they have different dietary requirements. yeah get another guinea pig to keep your one company, don't put the guinea pigs with the rabbit!
Dont put her in the same cage because my best friend did that and her rabbit killed the guinea pig

they got on fine they were best friends but the rabbit was much more powerfull and when rabbits run they kik out their legs and that is a very powerfull kik so no they have no guinea pig
Yeapp x

they should be fine there from the same family youu no x

there perfectly fine together i did it x and they get along reall good x

x

hope i helped x
buy a new hutch. the rabbit may attack the guinea pig if they have not grown up together and it better to be safe than sorry :)
No a new hutch becuase a rabbit can bully a guinea pig so not a good idea
you would need a big cage so the rabbit can run freely and have time out from the guineapig if they are in a cage that is too small they would fight
yea its ok to put them together but just check on them like every 30 min or so
dint put her with a rabbit
Please do NOT attempt to house a rabbit and a guinea pig together! This is pointless and dangerous for many reasons:

1) Strength

Rabbits are much more powerful than guinea pigs and one kick from a rabbit can easily injure or even kill a guinea pig. Even by accident - if the rabbits gets spooked and kicks out, or is doing happy ';binkies'; the piggie could end up dead!

2) Bullying

It is pretty common for rabbits to bully guinea pigs - just harassing them, nipping, preventing them getting to the food bowl etc. In some cases people have even had pigs bullying rabbits. Either way its not good.

3) Company

Rabbits and guinea pigs are both social animals that need the company of their own kind. However, they do NOT count as company for eachother! They are totally different species which do not behave or communicate in the same way. If you house a rabbit and guinea pig together you will just have a lonely rabbit that happens to share a hutch with a lonely guinea pig.

4) Diet

Although similar the diet of rabbits and guinea pigs is not the same. For example, guinea pigs need extra vitamin C, and rabbit foods often contain other ingrediants harmful to piggies.

5) Disease

Many pet rabbits carry the disease Pasteurella which does not affect them and causes no symptoms (so you wouldn't know they had it) but this disease can be fatal to guinea pigs.

Seriously - all the big animal welfare groups, plus all the specific rabbit or guinea pig rescues / groups will tell you that rabbits and guinea pigs should not be housed together. Just because some people do it anyway does not make it right or safe.

If you want to keep guinea pigs for their own sake (because you like and want them) then fine - but they MUST live in their own hutch away from any rabbits. And yes you need to get at least two - they are a social species and need the company of their own kind.

If you want a companion for your rabbit (which you should consider as they are also a social species) then it must be another rabbit. The best pairing is one neutered male with one spayed female) BOTH animals MUST be neutered!) Don't forget though, more animals need more space etc so make sure you have a large enough cage for them.
