How many rabbit proof fences are there in Australia?

2 answers were posted on a previous question - It runs between the borders of Queensland and New South Wales Australia %26amp; It runs from Wallal to Jerdacuttup (in Western Australia)

Is one of these answers correct - or are both of them correct or are there 3 fences? How many rabbit proof fences are there in Australia?
As far as I know, the rabbit proof fence is in Western Australia only. That fence was built in 3 stages, but they all connect up. The movie Rabbit Proof Fence is set on that fence.

BUT there is another fence that is called the Dingo Fence that is/was supposed to keep dingoes out of the pastoral areas in the south east corner of Australia. That one runs along the border between NWS and Queensland for part of its lenth. And reading about it on wikipedia, I see that it was originally used to try to stop the spread of rabbits as well, so I guess it could count as a rabbit proof fence after all.How many rabbit proof fences are there in Australia?
Did you see the movie The Rabbit Proof Fence? Sorry I dont know the answer to your question but if you havent seen the movie you should rent it. It's very interesting.
There are totally 3 Rabbit Proof Fences in Australia. They are -

Fence No. 1

Starting pointConstruction began in December 1901. The No 1 Rabbit Proof Fence was completed in 1907, running from Starvation Harbour to near Cape Keraudren. When it was completed it was known as the Barrier Fence. The construction of a large part of the fence was the responsibility of Richard Anketell, who also surveyed the last seventy miles of the fence, which took from 20 August 1904 to 30 September 1907. In this time, he had 120 men, 210 horses, 41 donkeys and 350 camels.

Fence No. 2

Before the fence had even been completed, rabbits had made their way past the fence. Rabbits had been found west of the line in 1902. Two more fences were begun, Fence No. 2 begun in 1905, which is further west, starting from a point near Bremer Bay in the south. It is 1166 km (724 miles) long starting from Point Ann on the south coast, going to Cunderdin, 150 km east of Perth, it joined the first fence at Gum Creek near Murchison. There were not many rabbits west of the Number 2 fence until the 1920s.

Fence No. 3

Fence No. 3 which is a shorter east-west fence running from near the Zuytdorp Cliffs north of Kalbarri to meet with the No. 2 fence. The construction of all the fences was completed by 1908.
If you should ever see a rabbit basking on the beach, you'll know it didn't work...

I wish we had so many rabbits where I live that we needed a fence to control them. I'd be out there shootin' the dickens out of 'em, day and night...
I was under the impression there was only one very long fence, I could be wrong...I do know that years ago rabbits did not exist in Australia.. There were, I believe about 26 rabbits brought in on a trade ship and well you should know the rest.. Rabbits multiply.. and that's just what they did.. so much so that they over populated the continent of Australia and started distroying the land and thats why they built the fence, which did not work because they dug underneath the fence to continue the damage... I thought you might like to know if you didn't already know....I found out this information when I was watching EXTREME ANIMALS, the show on TV. This particular episode was about Extreme Distructive Animals... I also agree with the other person who answered, who said watch the movie ';The Rabbit Fence'; it is a real good movie... Have a nice day..
