If you plan on letting the ferret out all day, and only having her in the cage at night you can probably get away with a large rabbit cage, just make sure it's large enough to fit food and water, preferably at a distance from the litter box, and somewhere for the ferret to sleep.

If you're still interested in making a ferret cage check out this site: http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/articles/NI鈥?/a> It shows you how to make multi-level cages with wood and wire frames.

There are lots of different ways you can build a cage, but with ferrets in mind you'll want to make a taller, multi-level cage.

Well for my ferrets I bought a cheap aviary from the newspaper and used what ever material I had to fix it up into a ferret cage, turned out real nice! it had two stories! and we cut the door into half and put tubes and things for them. It's amazing what you can do with your imagination, and really not expensive. Basically I improvised a bird cage into a ferret cage with 2 floors.
I used a rabbit cage for the until i could purchase a larger cage. The problem with the rabbit cage is that you can not keep them in it long. After awhile i even keeping mine in it a night. I also hated when i needed mine to be caged and had to put him in the little cage. I would just purchase it and save up for a nicer cage.
